A woman by the name of Chaw Sandi Tun was arrested back in October where she made a Facebook post that made fun of the army chief’s uniform. She had basically compared his uniform to that of a longyi (a sarong) that was worn by Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the National League for Democracy party.
However it seems that the current government did not appreciate her sense of humor as she was sentenced under Section 66(d) of the Telecommunications Law, which basically banned defamation and for “disturbing” people. Chaw’s lawyer claims that she made the post and that her account was hacked.
Myanmar isn’t the only country where posting on social media can land you in trouble. Recently over in Thailand, a man was arrested for liking, not posting or creating, a post which contained a doctored image of the country’s king. Just a few months ago, China recently made multiple arrests over posts on social media that were allegedly the spreading of rumors.
