blackberry-priv-review_ubergizmo_15The BlackBerry PRIV was launched with Android 5.1 Lollipop preinstalled, which we suppose is fair since chances are the software was in development way before Android 6.0 Marshmallow was released. However we expect that BlackBerry will eventually update the phone to the latest build of Android, but when?

Last we heard it will be in 2016, and now it looks like we can expect an announcement to be made soon. According to BlackBerry executive Ron Louks, he revealed during CES 2016 that a date for the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update will be announced in the first quarter of 2016. This means that in the next couple of months, we should have a date to look forward to.

Hopefully the announcement of the date of release and the actual release won’t be too far apart. Meaning that we’d prefer if the announcement wasn’t made in February, only to be released in June. That being said, BlackBerry did mention to PRIV users how they plan on keeping the device as secure as well, even if it isn’t running BB OS 10.

One of those ways is to ensure the phone is updated with the latest software, so hopefully the update will arrive in a timely manner. It will also set the tone for BlackBerry’s future with Android, especially since Android OEMs, save for Nexus devices, have been rather slow in pushing out updates, so hopefully BlackBerry will break the mould.
