lenovo-thinkpad-x1-carbon-2016_07Like clockwork, Lenovo has introduced yet another X1 Carbon model for 2016. This particular model remains aimed at the business segment of the market and addresses a combination of ruggedness (Military Specifications, or “MilSpec”) and connectivity (Optional LTE-A wireless broadband) along with an Intel vPro that delivers security features IT department require.

From the outside, the Carbon X1 remains a 14” laptop (2560×1440 or 1920×1080) that uses an IPS LCD display to render high-quality and wide-angle images. The display is usually mate, which makes it more suitable to work in open areas where the ambient light can be very strong.

The design uses the general design language that we have come to know and appreciate. As its name indicate, its chassis uses Carbon for its strength/weight properties. Just like previous models, it uses a black paint that is highly resistant to scratches and wear. It is about 0.66” thick and weighs an impressive 2.6Lbs which is no small feat for a laptop that has a 52Whr battery capacity.

Inside, it features Intel’s latest Core i7 processor with a vPro chipset. There’s 16GB of RAM and Lenovo has included a PCI-E SSD drive with capacities of up to 1TB. The NVMe PCIe SSD allows higher data throughput than SATA equivalents.

Finally, when users get back to the office, they can dock without wires, thanks to WiGig docking. Because WiGig technology can move up to 7Gbps (7 Gigabits per Second), it’s fast enough to transmit heavy loads such as display data or large network loads. Intel has been promoting WiGig for some time but it’s nice to see it getting more traction.

The 2016 Lenovo X1 Carbon will start shipping in Feb 2016 at $1299+.
