The placements of TVs are pretty standard. In the living room, mounted on a wall, in your bedroom, and so on. However what if you could place TVs in more unconventional places without it being an eyesore? What if you could have your TV double up as a display case for when you need one?

Turns out the folks at Panasonic have just what you need. During CES 2016 last week, the company unveiled a transparent TV prototype that seems to be both pleasing to the eye and at the same time, functional. As you can see in the photo, this is a TV panel that allows you to see right through it.

This means that when the TV is not in use, and instead of having a big black box sitting in the middle of your living room, why not use it as a display case for your action figures, your collection of antique teapots, tiny fragrance bottles, and etc.? However according to Tom’s Guide, there is a slight dark tinge on the display even when it is turned off, but it is only a prototype so we guess we can forgive that.

The TV can also be split in two, where the top half can function as a music player, while the bottom half remains see-through, which will be handy at parties where you want to show off your collection but have a music player handy at the same time. Unfortunately in terms of availability, don’t hold your breath. Apparently Panasonic expects that if all goes well, such a device would only be available to the general public in 2-5 years.
