takata

Ever since it was confirmed that Takata’s faulty airbag inflators were responsible for multiple accidents and that they remain a risk to drivers many major car manufacturers like Honda and Toyota that sourced inflators from this company recalled affected vehicles to ensure that drivers were not put at risk of injury of death. It’s already been one of the biggest recalls in the United States but according to a new report, it’s going to get bigger still.

Reuters reports, citing a person with knowledge of the matter, that auto safety regulators in the United States are examining whether an additional 70 to 90 million Takata airbag inflators need to be recalled as they pose a risk to drivers.

More than 29 million inflators have already been recalled so far as the faulty units have been linked to nine deaths in the United States. If regulators do decide to recall the additional units this would mean that over 120 million Takata inflators installed in cars on the road in the United States will need to be replaced.

Takata did not comment on the scribe’s request to a comment on the possibility that as many as 90 million additional inflators still in vehicles needed to be recalled. If it has to go through with this the additional recall will cost Takata billions of dollars and add years to the replacement process that’s already stretched out as it is.
