telegram_100mWhen it comes to messaging apps, it’s safe to say that WhatsApp is currently in the lead with more than 1 billion users. However it looks like its competitors are nipping on their heels, especially the folks at Telegram who have recently announced that they have managed to hit 100 million monthly active users.

According to Telegram, “Two and a half years ago we launched Telegram. Then you told your friends and co-workers about it. And they told their friends and co-workers. And we started growing. Now Telegram has more than 100,000,000 monthly active users. 350,000 new users sign up each day. We’re delivering 15 billion messages daily.”

If there is one advantage that Telegram has over other platforms like WhatsApp, it is that it works across multiple platforms and devices. Users can download the desktop app, the smartphone version, or even a tablet version, meaning that your messages will sync across different devices so you can pick up where you left off.

Last year there was a bit of controversy where it was suggested that WhatsApp had attempted to block Telegram links in its app, but if that were true, it didn’t seem to do much good. Of course Telegram still has a long way to go to catch up to WhatsApp, but so far so good. If you’d like to check it out, you can head on over to the iTunes App Store or Google Play for the download.
