Xperia XA White DesignYesterday Sony announced a bunch of new phones in the form of the Xperia X series. There was no mention of the Sony Xperia Z6 which we assumed was because Sony was planning an announcement for a later date, although could it be that the Xperia Z series has been replaced with the Xperia X?

According to a post on the Sony Mobile Facebook page for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, a Sony rep responded to one of their fans and seemed to imply that the Xperia X series had replaced the Xperia Z, and that there would not be a Sony Xperia Z6. A translation posted on Reddit reads, “Hi Sarah, there will be no Z6. The new X series is under a modified concept that meets the needs of our users even more. You can of course still rely on the latest technology in our smartphones – which has nothing to do with the name. Best regards, your Sony team.”

No doubt this is a rather sudden change, especially when you consider that on Twitter, the official Sony Xperia News account seemed to suggest that the Xperia Z series was still alive and well, “Xperia Z5 series is performing well for us, we introduced Xperia X series adding on intelligence to help you to do more.”

Sony has yet to officially confirm if what the rep said was accurate, although to be fair since it is a translation, perhaps something got lost along the way, but either way what do you guys think? Do you think that the recently launched Xperia X handsets make a worthy successor to the Xperia Z lineup?

Update: the answer is yes.
