coachella

Virtual reality or VR is increasingly being used as a marketing strategy by companies and festivals alike so it’s not surprising to see the Coachella music festival jump on the bandwagon as well. Attendees will find a VR headset in the Coachella 2016 welcome box which also contains the requisite tickets and wristbands. A companion Coachella VR app will work with the Cardboard headset and Gear VR to provide VR content.

For those who are unaware, Coachella is an annual music festival that features performances by some of the biggest names in music as well as relatively new artists. It takes place in Indio, California this year from April 15th to 17th and April 22nd to 24th.

The Coachella VR app contains pictures and interviews from last year’s festival in virtual reality. The Cardboard headset that’s being shipped in the welcome box and the Gear VR can both be used to access this content.

The app is going to be updated regularly with new content up to the festival’s first week in mid-April. It’s unclear at this point in time whether viewers at home will be able to live stream the performances at Coachella 2016 in virtual reality.

It has never been possible to live stream Coachella performances in virtual reality and if that becomes possible this year it would be a major improvement for people who can’t make it to the actual festival. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.
