Samsung had confirmed a couple of months ago that its mobile payments service would soon go live in China, made possible by a partnership with China UnionPay. A month after Apple Pay was launched in the people’s republic, the company today confirmed that Samsung Pay is now available in China with China UnionPay.
Samsung Pay will work anywhere customers can swipe or tap their card to pay. Samsung’s aim is to make its payment service available to as many customers as possible in China and for that reason it’s cooperating with China UnionPay and many banks.
Customers can use the mobile payment service on Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5 handsets. The company says that there is the possibility that support for Samsung Pay will arrive on additional mid-range handsets in the future.
The service currently has support for select credit and debit cards from nine banks including China CITIC Bank, China Construction Bank, China Everbright Bank, China Guangfa Bank, China Minsheng Banking Corp. Ltd, China Merchants Bank, Hua Xia Bank , Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and Ping An Bank.
Samsung Pay will eventually have support for select credit and debit cards from six more banks which include Bank of China, Bank of Beijing, Bank of Communications, China Bohai Bank, Industrial Bank and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank.
