Right now for the most part, the touchscreens that we interact with are only as large as manufacturers make them, and as expected, the bigger they are, the more expensive they get. However what if you could have a touchscreen display as big as a kitchen countertop, or as small as a coffee table without having to keep buying new gadgets?

Turns out Sony is experimenting with that idea because during SXSW, Sony took the wraps off a prototype projector that can basically turn any flat surface into a touch-sensitive display. To top things off, it also comes with a depth sensor so that the projector will be able to see what has been placed on the table, and in turn offer up information about it.

Some of the examples shown off include placing objects like cups, in which the projector was able to detect it and also sense how deep the cup is. It also appears to be capable of recognizing books and turning those books into interactive versions filled with drawings and animations, thus making an otherwise boring book a more fun and lively one.

Unfortunately as the projector was created by Sony’s Future Lab, it also means that this could possibly just remain as a prototype and not necessarily become an actual product, and to be fair, we’re not sure if such a device would have very wide market appeal, at least not at the moment, but what say you? Is this something you’d like to have in your home some day?
