overwatch heroesWe’re sure many are wondering how well-received Blizzard’s latest IP, Overwatch, would be. After all the company has primarily been known for its Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo franchises for the past decade or so. Turns out we didn’t need to be worried because by all account, Overwatch is doing really well.

According to Blizzard, they have announced that Overwatch is currently home to more than 7 million players to date. Given that the game was released on the 24th of May, which was a little over a week ago, those are some really impressive numbers. It helps that the game has received largely positive reviews as well.

Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment said, “We poured a lot of effort into creating a game—and a new universe—that anyone could enjoy. We’re ecstatic to have had such a successful launch, and we’re looking forward to all of the fun, competition, and new content still to come.”

That being said, we expect that the 7 million figure should normalize soon the game starts to mature and stabilize with its core players (hopefully we won’t see a Miitomo-like churn rate), but in any case 7 million is certainly a sign that things are off to a very good start.
