instagramIf you use Instagram, chances are you might have stumbled across photos with troll-ish, rude, and inappropriate comments. Unfortunately this is the reality of the internet and social media where people think that it’s OK to say anything to anyone, but the good news for Instagrammers is that the company will soon give you the power of moderation.

Prior to this, users had to moderate comments one by one, or just ignore them entirely. Users could report comments to Instagram, but it isn’t always the most efficient method. However with this upcoming feature, Instagram will soon let users create their own filters to filter out comments that they deem to be personally offensive.

The idea is that while there are certain things that could be considered offensive to the majority, there are certain things that only you might find offensive. Users will be able to choose to certain words or phrases that they think are offensive to them, or they can choose to disable comments entirely on certain posts.

According to Instagram’s head of public policy, Nicky Jackson Colaco, he told The Washington Post, “Our goal is to make Instagram a friendly, fun and, most importantly, safe place for self expression. We have slowly begun to offer accounts with high volume comment threads the option to moderate their comment experience. As we learn, we look forward to improving the comment experience for our broader community.”
