Microsoft Edits Its Xbox Play Anywhere Promise

Microsoft announced Xbox Play Anywhere during its press conference at the E3 2016 gaming convention last month. The feature will arrive later this year and it will allow people to purchase a game once on either Xbox One or Windows 10 and get it on the other platform as well for free. The company had promised that every new title published by Microsoft Studios is going to support Xbox Play Anywhere but it appears to have quietly edited that promise.

The company had made this announcement through a blog post which promised that “Every new title published from Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere.” That’s pretty self-explanatory and doesn’t require you to go in detail because it’s straightforward.

However, Microsoft has updated this blog post quietly to add “that we showed onstage at E3 this year” to the sentence. This opens the door for some titles that Microsoft Studios doesn’t want to make compatible with Xbox Play Anywhere.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer says that this doesn’t mean Microsoft is going back on the promise of allowing players to buy a game once and enjoy it across both Windows 10 and Xbox One. He says that most of the games published by Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere, and that this stipulation has been added just in case a unique game is published which is not right for all devices.

Xbox Play Anywhere is going to be launched in September this year.
