Ex-Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Thinks A Video Game Movie Could Win An Oscar

assassin's_creed_movieVideo game movies have gained a notorious reputation over the years. It seems that regardless of what the movie is based on and what genre it is, somehow they always end up being rather terrible. This is despite the fact that the game that it is based on has a huge fan following who loves the character and the story of the game itself.

A prime example would be the Warcraft movie which was panned in the US but yet somehow made a lot of money in China. That being said, former Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean Julien Baronnet believes that video game movies will eventually get their dues, and that one day we could be seeing one awarded an Oscar.

Speaking to GameSpot, Baronnet stated that he has seen some video game film projects in the works, and from what he’s seen he has been thoroughly impressed. “I was astonished by some of them. The creative angle, the production design, the artistic choices, the originality. Yes, definitely I think that maybe one video game movie can win an Oscar…if it’s properly done.”

A couple of years ago, a university professor opined as to why video game movies tend to fail, stating that because a movie takes players away from the heart of the action and the choices that they make that it no longer feels the same. He does have a good point but as the saying goes, never say never.
