Walgreens has become the first retail store chain in the United States to integrate its loyalty rewards program with Android Pay. This is the first time that a retail chain has supported Google’s mobile payment service this way. Walgreens customers will now be able to add their Balance Rewards card information to the Android Pay app on their compatible smartphones.

Android Pay first got support for loyalty card programs last year, at that time customers could only get My Coke Rewards through participating Coca-Cola vending machines.

Before making a payment, customers will need to hold their Android device near the PIN pad and the appropriate rewards information will be automatically applied. To complete the checkout, customers will then have to place their device again near the PIN Pad for the payment to be processed via Android Pay.

Android Pay is easy to setup on a device and customers will continue getting all of the rewards and benefits that are offered by credit and debit cards. Walgreens loyalty card integration means that its customers don’t miss out on the benefits even when paying with their mobile device.

Walgreens is one of the biggest retail chains to support Apple Pay. It accepts Google’s mobile payment service at its nearly 8,200 stores across the United States.
