Apple Reportedly ‘Rebooting’ Its Self-Driving Car Project

apple_logoIt is probably one of the worst kept secrets in the tech and automotive industry that Apple is working on some kind of electric/self-driving car codenamed “Project Titan”. From what we have heard, it is a pretty huge project and Apple is said to have leased out various plots of land and buildings to conduct their tests and experiments.

However it seems that it could all be coming to a screeching halt. According to a report from The New York Times, they have learnt that Apple could be considering rebooting their car plans and rethinking their strategy for self-driving vehicles. Apparently dozens of employees have since been laid off as a result of this “reboot”, and there are several parts of Project Titan that have also reportedly been shut down.

It is unclear as to what might have prompted Apple to rethink their strategy. However according to the report, it has suggested that while Apple has been testing out their prototypes, they are far from ready from being commercially available. As Apple’s CEO Tim Cook had hinted at earlier this year, customers would probably have to wait for a while.

He was quoted then as saying, “Do you remember when you were a kid, and Christmas Eve it was so exciting, you weren’t sure what was going to be downstairs? Well, it’s going to be Christmas Eve for a while.” If anything, this latest report sounds like we’ll be waiting even longer than before.
