Have you ever been craving a burrito but are too lazy to walk or drive out for one? Sure, there are some places that might deliver, but how cool would it be if burritos could be delivered by drones? The good news is that for students at Virginia Tech, burrito delivery by drones will soon be an actual thing.
According to a report from Bloomberg, the experimental service is expected to begin later this month, and the companies behind it is Project Wing, a division of Alphabet Inc., and Chipotle Mexican Grill, with the Federal Aviation Administration giving the companies their blessing to trial out this service.
The drones are automated but there will be humans standing by to take control in the event that something does wrong. There are also rules to comply with and since drones are not allowed to fly over people, participants in this experimental service will be shielded. One of the goals of this experimental service is to see how well food can be protected while being delivered by a drone.
After all what’s the point of drone delivery if your food comes all squashed and messed up, right? Another goal would be to convince the FAA that drones can avoid each other and safely navigate themselves to drop spots. If successful, don’t be surprised if we start seeing drone food delivery becoming a common option in the future.
