In a letter that Netflix sent to the FCC, it seems that the company is proposing making data caps illegal. Basically Netflix wants the FCC to ban data caps on internet connections, as well as mobile connections, meaning that everyone has unlimited data to do with as they please, or in Netflix’s case, stream all the TV shows and movies in its portfolio.
According to Netflix, “Data caps (especially low data caps) and usage based pricing discourage a consumer’s consumption of broadband and may impede the ability of some households to watch internet television in a manner and amount that they would like.” They also argue that data caps serve no purpose and aren’t actually that useful in managing network congestion.
Of course Netflix has an interest in removing data caps so their petition to the FCC isn’t exactly what you would call altruistic, but we’re guessing that there are many internet users out there who would probably agree with their line of thinking.
