Apple’s Polycarbonate MacBook Now Declared Obsolete

Back before Apple started to make all of their laptops out of aluminum unibodies, Apple used polycarbonate like they did with their lower-end MacBook laptops. While those laptops haven’t been made in years, it seems that their time has officially come to an end as the laptop has been marked as “obsolete”.

Spotted by the folks at MacRumors, the change of the status to obsolete means that these are devices that are considered to be discontinued more than 7 years ago. According to Apple’s support website, “Apple has discontinued all hardware service for obsolete products with no exceptions. Service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products.”

However note that the laptop is only marked as obsolete for the rest of the world except for the US and Turkey, in which it is marked as “vintage”. This means that the laptop is still eligible for service and parts can still be obtained, although these are due to the laws in the countries in which it prohibits manufacturers from halting support entirely.

That being said we’re not sure how many people still have these polycarbonate MacBooks lying around or if they are still using them, especially since they are so old that replacing them would probably be cheaper, but either way they will be missed.
