Opera Max VPN App Discontinued

Opera released its Opera Max VPN app back in 2014. The app was meant to help users reduce their data use on mobile. The app used to compress data before it reached the device so that users saved data when they streamed a video or browsed websites. It became very useful for those who were on plans with monthly data limits. Opera has now decided to discontinue Opera Max.

The company announced today that it has decided to discontinue Opera Max because the app had a “substantially different value proposition” than its browser products. It represented a different focus for Opera, one that the company doesn’t seem to be willing to pursue now.

Opera says that it’s going to focus on its browsers and other upcoming services instead of spending time and resources maintaining Opera Max.

As a consequence of this decision, no further upgrades for the Opera Max app will be released moving forward. The app has also been pulled from the Google Play Store so it can no longer be downloaded from there.

Opera does say that it’s going to keep the Opera Max service up and running for its existing users “for a period of time.” It will inform those users about the termination of server-side support in due time.
