LTE Apple Watch Will Only Work In The Country Of Purchase

With the launch of the LTE Apple Watch Series 3, Apple has finally managed to untether Apple Watch owners from their iPhones. It means that if you don’t want to bring your iPhone everywhere you go, this is an option to remain connected. Unfortunately if you plan on traveling with it, note that you might still need your iPhone (and a local SIM).

According to MacRumors, one of their readers confirmed with an Apple support rep who told him that the LTE Apple Watch will only work in its country of purchase. This means that if you were thinking of buying the LTE model overseas and claim a tax refund when leaving, you could still do that, except that the watch will lose its LTE functionality when you get back to your home country.

The rep was quoted as saying, “If you purchased one (an Apple Watch S3 GPS + Cellular) through the US Apple Online Store, it’ll only work for the 4 US carriers. It wouldn’t work internationally unfortunately. I’m not entirely sure what type of error it would show if you took a US Watch to Germany, but it wouldn’t be compatible with Telekom.”

So if you were hoping to roam with the Apple Watch Series 3, that’s pretty much out of the question as well. However if you don’t mind pairing it with your iPhone, then you should be able to use it in another country as long as your iPhone has an internet connection, so that’s something to take note of if you plan on buying it.
