Earlier this year, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook pretty much confirmed what everyone already knew, which is that Apple is working on self-driving car technology. This is why it doesn’t really come as a surprise to learn that in a report from Jalopnik, Apple could be interested in leasing Chrysler’s old proving grounds to test out their tech.
Their source has told them that over the past few months, Apple has been busy recruiting automotive test engineers and technicians from other proving grounds in the same state, suggesting that they could be getting ready to test out what they’ve managed to come up with so far.
Now before you get too excited at the prospect of an Apple Car, the way Cook phrased the confirmation seemed to suggest that Apple was more interested in the technology behind autonomous vehicles, as opposed to building a car themselves. Prior to that, there were rumors that Apple was interested, but later scrapped their plans in favor of building the tech behind it instead.
What exactly will come of this remains to be seen, but we know that Apple is interested in automotives, thanks to things like CarPlay, but exactly how they will integrate themselves further into cars is another story that has yet to be told.
