Based on the rate that the Nintendo Switch was selling, it was expected that the console would have no problems surpassing its predecessor, the Wii U, in terms of lifetime sales within a year. Based on Nintendo’s latest financials (via The Verge), it looks like those predictions have come true as the Switch has essentially outsold the Wii U.

According to Nintendo’s numbers, they have managed to sell 14.86 million units of the Switch to date, which is versus that of the Wii U which managed 13.56 million units over the course of five years, where its production officially came to an end in 2017. It also seems that all of this happened within less than a year of the Switch being released, which took place in March last year.

Based on this we can expect that the Switch will continue to move a lot of units in the future, assuming that Nintendo is able to keep churning out exciting titles for the console. That being said, this is actually not the first time the Switch surpassed the Wii U. Earlier this month the Switch’s sales in Japan outsold those of the Wii U, but that’s just the Japanese market, with the latest figures being for the entire world.

It also appears that in addition to the console selling well, its games have also been extremely well-received, with Super Mario Odyssey selling 9.07 million copies, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 7.33 million, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at 6.7 million, and Splatoon 2 hitting 4.91 million copies sold.
