It was reported back in January that the Instagram team was developing a video calling feature which may or may not be rolled out. It appears that the team’s work has progressed significantly since then and that we might get to see Instagram offer voice call and video call functionality in the not too distant future. Icons for both features have been revealed by the APKs or Android Application Packages for the standalone Instagram Direct app and Instagram proper.

It’s not uncommon for APK files to reveal bits and pieces of information about upcoming features. The video and voice call icons were found lying dormant in the app and will only surface when the Facebook-owned service decides to flip the switch on these features. This suggests that Instagram may soon provide video and voice call functionality within its direct messaging system.

When approached with the icons that were discovered in the main Instagram app and the standalone Instagram Direct app, a spokesperson for the company told TechCrunch that “I’m afraid we can’t comment on this one.” When the first report about the video call feature came out in January a spokesperson for the company simply said “no comment.”

So it seems that the company wants to remain tightlipped about this until it’s ready to formally launch these features. From the looks of things, it may not be long before Instagram users are capable of making voice and video calls within their DMs.
