Scholarships to schools are usually given on the merit of the person applying for it, and in the past it used to be based on either how smart the student is based on their grades, or if they were athletic enough where they could represent the school that they are applying for. However these days we are starting to see a different type of scholarship where schools are giving them out to students who perform well in eSports.

In fact it seems that the Ashland University in Ohio have announced that they will be giving out scholarships for students who perform well in Epic Games’ Fortnite Battle Royale. Fortnite has been out for a while now, but the success of the game on mobile has shown that it has huge potential to be the next eSport. Ashland University already has an eSports program and Fortnite will be the latest title that they will be adding to their roster.

According to head coach Josh Buchanan, “Fortnite appeals to both the core and casual gaming audience. We’re excited to provide this platform for gamers who want to showcase their skills in a more competitive space. Fortnite facilitates an environment that allows players to get creative, innovate and show off their mastery of their skills.” There are hopes that eventually collegiate leagues will be able to come together for official Fortnite competitions.
