The thing about us humans is that for the most part, we can explain why we do what we do. For example if someone asked why you are picking a certain brand over another, you could potentially lay out the reasons why you chose it in a (sometimes) logical manner. However the question is, can AI do the same?

That’s actually an area that DARPA is hoping to explore further (via Engadget) as they are hoping to develop AI that can explain its actions. Dubbed “third wave” AI, DARPA is hoping to push development of AI that can explain how it arrived at its decision, for example if the AI detects an object, it will then be able to logically explain why and how they reached that conclusion.

It will be interesting to see how this can be applied in the future. At the moment it appears that AI will play a big role in our future, where it can be used in various industries such as medical where we’re seeing how some researchers are using AI to potentially look out for diseases and ailments that humans might miss.

By having AI explain itself, it can give doctors an insight as to how they reached that conclusion, or in some instances there might be false positives that doctors can then disregard.
