It’s pretty common for social apps these days to have support for two-factor authentication. That’s what made it particularly surprising that despite having more than one billion monthly active users, Instagram has only just added support for two-factor authentication apps. It’s a standard security feature that has eluded the Facebook-owned photosharing service for an unreasonable amount of time.

The company has confirmed in a post on its blog that Instagram users will soon be able to use third-party authentication apps to log into their Instagram account. This means that you will be able to use apps like Google Authenticator and 1Password to log into Instagram soon.

If you want to use such an app to log into Instagram, first go to your profile in the app and tap on the menu icon to access the Settings menu. The “Two-Factor Authentication” option gives way to the “Authentication App” feature which lets users select the form of two-factor authentication they prefer.

If an authentication app is already installed on the device, it will automatically be detected and a login code will be sent to it. You will then have to go to the app in order to retrieve the code and enter it into Instagram to have two-factor authentication enabled automatically.
