Huawei has been making some very feature-packed smartphones recently and it’s looking to continue this streak in the coming year as well. The company envisions flagship smartphones with quad cameras at the back and 10x optical zoom. It won’t be the first with a quad camera smartphone, though, as Samsung laid claim to that title with the Galaxy A9 last month.

President of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group for the Western European Region Walter Ji told AndroidPIT in an interview that Huawei is looking to release a smartphone with four rear cameras at some point in 2019. He also teased that one of the sensors on that quad camera setup could provide 10x optical zoom.

Now optical zoom on smartphones is nothing new but it’s yet to reach the level that Huawei is aspiring to. The Huawei P20 Pro’s telephoto lens allows for 3x optical zoom while the Galaxy A9’s telephoto lens supports 2x optical zoom. Huawei wants to hit 10x on a flagship smartphone.

Ji didn’t exactly say if the 10x optical zoom sensor would be ready for use in commercial devices as soon as 2019. Huawei is still conducting research and would obviously have to put the sensor through its paces before deciding to ship it on a commercial device.
