Battery cases for the iPhone aren’t new and there have been plenty of third-party cases created in the past. However a few years ago, Apple tried their hand at creating an official battery case called the Smart Battery Case. The case was released in 2015 but hasn’t been updated since for Apple’s newer handsets.

However according to a report from 9to5Mac, it seems that a recent icon change spotted in watchOS has suggested that Apple could have a new model in the works. The previous case’s design had a “lip” at the bottom that made it bigger than it was, but based on this new icon, it shows that the lip is gone and that the camera cutout has been adjusted for the new orientation that was introduced in the iPhone X.

Unfortunately it is unclear as to which iPhones the case will support. This is because as pointed out by 9to5Mac, Apple would need to create three different cases for the iPhone Xs (iPhone X shares the dimensions), iPhone XR, and the iPhone Xs Max, which while plausible might not necessarily be the most efficient use of resources, especially since it would be hard to gauge how many units of each model they would need to produce.

There is no word on when this new Smart Battery Case will be released, but if and when it does come out, is this something you might be interested in getting?
