With Sony showing off a 48 megapixel smartphone camera sensor earlier this year, it seems that the megapixel race is once again underway for mobile devices. Huawei’s latest Mate 20 and P20 Pro top out at 40 megapixels. Its local rival Xiaomi is looking to kick things up a notch with a smartphone that has a 48 megapixel rear camera.

Xiaomi president Lin Bin took posted a close up photo on Weibo of what seems to be a smartphone with a 48 megapixel rear camera. We can also see a dual LED flash in the image. The number of lenses is not clear from this photo so it could either be a dual or triple camera system.

No further information has been shared by Lin at this point in time other than that it would be launched in January next year. He added that he has used this smartphone for a few weeks and feels that it’s “not bad!.”

If the company does launch this smartphone next month it would most likely have the world’s first smartphone with a 48 megapixel camera. Whether it will use Sony or Samsung’s 48MP camera sensor remains to be seen. If the device is set to arrive next month we should be hearing more rumors and reports about it in the coming weeks.
