#CES2019 – The thing about external storage is that usually they act as backup devices as most users would typically prefer to edit their photos, videos, and audio directly from their computers. However SanDisk has recently taken the wraps off their latest SSD in the form of the SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD which boasts read speeds of up to 1GB/s.

What this means is that you could in theory edit directly off this SSD due to how fast it is, but of course whether you want to or not is up to you. This is thanks to the use of NVMe technology that saturates the USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface that allows it to reach those speeds. In addition to fast read speeds, the SSD also feature IP55 certification which means that it is somewhat water-resistant.

We wouldn’t go swimming with it but if you take it with you on hikes or camps or the outdoors in general, a splash or two shouldn’t ruin it. It will be available in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options where it is set to be released in the spring of 2019. Unfortunately SanDisk does not mention how much it will cost, but generally speaking SSDs are still quite expensive and given these features, we doubt that it will be cheap.
