The company had been teasing its new flagship device over the past few weeks and ahead of MWC 2019 in Barcelona, Xiaomi has officially unveiled the Mi 9. It’s the successor to the Mi 8 and as such, improves on certain aspects of its predecessor. It has three rear cameras instead of the two on the Mi 8 and gets a major improvement under the hood.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 platform and will be available in 6GB and 12GB RAM configurations with up to 256GB of internal storage. Despite running on Qualcomm’s latest mobile platform, this isn’t a 5G device. Xiaomi did unveil a separate 5G phone at its press event, though.

It also features a 6.39 inch OLED display with a notch camera notch. There’s also a display-based fingerprint sensor. The biggest update in the camera department is on the rear. The triple camera system has lenses for telephoto, wide, and super wide modes. The main sensor is a 48 megapixel shooter from Sony, the 12 megapixel telephoto lens provides 2x optical magnification while the 16 megapixel super wide camera allows of a 117 degree field of view.

Xiaomi also mentioned that the Mi 9 has “Charge Turbo” wireless charging mode which enables 20W wireless charging on Xiaomi’s optional Charge Turbo charging pad or the motorized car mount. Xiaomi mentioned that this is the fastest wireless charging on the market as most devices are either at 7.5W or 10W. It claims that this can charge up the Mi 9’s 3,300mAh battery from 0 to 100 in one hour and 40 minutes. However, on a standard Qi charger, the device will only be charged at the maximum speed supported by that charger.

Xiaomi is going to launch the Mi 9 in China first with prices starting at 2,999 yuan or $450 for the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage model. It will be launched in markets across Europe later. Don’t hold out hope for a U.S. launch as the company doesn’t sell its smartphones Stateside currently.
