Bungie may have wanted to enable cross-platform transfer of Destiny characters in Destiny 2 but it was reportedly stopped by Sony from offering this functionality. This according to a new report which claims that Bungie really wanted to make this happen for players but the exclusivity partnership with Sony didn’t allow it to move forward with the plan.

Cross-progression and cross-play are increasingly becoming the norm in the gaming industry but it’s not possible to transfer characters in many games. Bungie reportedly wanted to make that happen for Destiny 2 but Sony wasn’t having any of it.

According to the report, Bungie wanted to enable Destiny 2 character transfers for players on PlayStation 4 and PC but Sony didn’t allow it. Apparently, Sony wants people to associate Destiny with the PlayStation 4, even if that means preventing players of the title from easily transferring their characters across the two main platforms.

Since Bungie has prematurely ended its partnership with long-term publishing partner Activision, one can hope that Bungie will reverse course and enable this functionality, but there’s not a lot of clarity as yet with regards to its agreement with Sony. One can only hope that this changes in the future as Sony does allow cross-play on select games such as Fortnite now.
