Sweden-based Mackmyra Whisky distillery has been working with Finnish tech company Fourkind and Microsoft on the world’s first whisky developed using artificial intelligence. This project was first detailed last month when the whisky had already been in production for a while. Those who were interested in getting a taste of it will now be able to pre-order it.

Mackmyra has announced today that the world’s first AI-created whisky is now available for pre-order. It’s called AI Whisky, because why wouldn’t it? It was created using a recipe that was put together using machine learning models that were powered by Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and cognitive services.

The model was fed with the distillery’s existing recipes, including ones for award-winning blends, customer preferences, sales data as well as input from Mackmyra’s Master Blender Angela D’Orazio.

This is also the first time that artificial intelligence has been used to automate one of the most time-consuming parts of the whisky creation proces which is the selection of different ingredients and combination with particular casks to achieve a unique flavor profile and character.

D’Orazio says that this was much more complex than the models that are used to create beer because of the sheer number of combinations possible. Mackmyra has now opened pre-orders for AI Whisky through its website for £59.90 a bottle. Shipping is expected to be in late August or early September 2019.
