Apple isn’t expected to launch its first iPhone with 5G support until next year. The company will certainly be taking its time in supporting the next-generation network standard on its smartphone. Several Android manufacturers have already put 5G phones on the market. Apple might be waiting for 5G networks to be more widespread before it puts a 5G iPhone on the market. A new report claims that while Apple’s first 5G iPhone will be released next year, it will only offer the option on all models by 2021.
Famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that only the high-end variants of the iPhone will offer 5G support next year. iPhones are released in the second half of the year so 5G coverage should have improved quite a bit by then.
Kuo predicts that Apple will begin selling all iPhones with 5G connectivity support as standard from 2021. The capability may initially be powered by Qualcomm’s 5G wireless modem but Apple is reportedly interested in making its own. Kuo says that Apple might introduce its own 5G modem by 2022/2023.
He also predicts that Apple will continue to release three new iPhone models per year. It may only be the 6.7 inch OLED model that offers 5G support next year.
