Waymo, Nissan, and Renault have teamed up to bring self-driving cars to France and Japan, the companies announced today. They have inked an exclusive agreement to explore all aspects of driverless mobility services for both passengers and deliveries in these countries. The announcement is a little light on details about any concrete plans to launch self-driving taxi services, for example.

It appears to be an arrangement similar to the ones that Waymo has announced with other car manufacturers. That’s probably why the wording in this announcement is somewhat vague as well.

The partners will utilize the strengths of each party and “expand expertise by assessing market opportunities, working together to research commercial, legal and regulatory issues related to driverless transportation-as-a-service offerings in France and Japan.”

It does mention that this is the first step to developing a long-term, profitable self-driving mobility service operation in the countries. The will first conduct the analysis in France and Japan, the home of Renault and Nissan respectively, before potentially moving to other markets, with the exception of China. To further the process of exploring the possibilities of this tie-up with Waymo, Renault and Nissan commits to creating joint venture Alliance-focused companies in their countries that will be dedicated to self-driving mobility services.
