You have heard all about foldable smartphones so it’s time to give rollable smartphones some attention. A new rumor claims that Sony is working on a smartphone that will have a roll-up display. What this would mean, at least in theory, is that the display could be rolled out to offer increased real estate. This is said to be a prototype currently so it’s unclear whether the device will ever make the cut.

Smartphone manufacturers are trying out different things as they look to set the tone for the future of mobile devices. Companies like Samsung and Huawei have already shown their foldable smartphones. It has previously been reported that Sony has a foldable smartphone in the pipeline as well.

This particular prototype is believed to feature a roll-up display. If it ever sees the light of day, the retail version is expected to feature the Snapdragon 855 platform in addition to Qualcomm’s X50 modem. A launch has even been predicted for December this year or early next year.

It’s too soon to be sure about a device like this, though, and with Sony focusing its mobile efforts on just a handful of markets now, such bets would require significant foresight from the company. Chalk this up as a wishful rumor at this point in time.
