Online harassment is a real problem that social media platforms have been trying to fight against to protect their users. It looks like Instagram could have a potential solution because the company has announced that they will be rolling out a new feature for its platform in the form of “Restrict”.

If you have been following the news, you might have heard that Instagram has been testing out the “Restrict” feature for a while now, and it looks like it is finally available for all users. In case you haven’t heard, Restrict is basically the act of shadowbanning, where it still allows the bully/harasser to follow the user and post comments and send messages, but none of it will show up in their posts and the messages will instead be redirected.

This means that the bully thinks that they can still go ahead and harass their victims, but in reality, none of what they say is going through. The idea is that by blocking users, it could have the potential for real-life consequence, where the bully might try harder to harass their victims, sometimes in real-life, or it could just result in them making a new account and starting the process all over again.

According to Instagram, “We are committed to leading the industry in the fight against online bullying and will continue to build on that commitment long term. We look forward to sharing more updates soon.”
