We’ve seen attempts from the likes of Impossible Foods and Beyond to create plant-based burgers that look, taste, and feel almost like real meat. We’ve also seen these companies team up with fast food companies such as Burger King and KFC, and now it seems that McDonald’s wants its own plant-based meat products as well.

The company has announced that they want to make its own plant-based “meat”. Speaking to USA Today, the company’s international president Ian Borden said that they plan to to start testing its McPlant products in several markets next year. “In the future, McPlant could extend across a line of plant-based products including burgers, chicken-substitutes and breakfast sandwiches.”

McDonald’s also claims that its McPlant products “delivers our iconic taste in a sink-your-teeth-in (and wipe-your-mouth) kind of sandwich. It’s made with a juicy, plant-based patty and served on a warm, sesame seed bun with all the classic toppings.” So far, initial reviews of the Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat have been largely positive.

While it might not necessarily 100% replicate the taste of meat, many were pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out compared to typical vegetarian takes on meat in the past. It will also be ideal for those who prefer a more healthy alternative or for those who don’t eat meat at all.
