Apple Apparently Considered Launching Their Own Cloud Gaming Service

With companies like Microsoft, Google, and NVIDIA launching cloud-based game streaming services, one has to wonder if this is something that Apple could have considered as well. It turns out that could have been the case, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in the latest issue of his Power On newsletter.

According to Gurman when he was asked if Apple could be working on such a service, he replied by saying that Apple did consider launching such a service alongside Apple Arcade. For those unfamiliar, Apple Arcade is a subscription gaming service where for a monthly fee, gamers will have access to a bunch of iOS games that do not have ads and do not come with in-app purchases.

A cloud service would be more akin to NVIDIA’s GeForce Now or Google Stadia, where gamers can purchase a game and have it streamed to them from a remote server. The idea is that by offloading the game’s processing power, it will make the game easier to play on devices that might not have the hardware capabilities, and even playable on devices like mobile phones.

However, Gurman claims that Apple did discuss that possibility internally, but has yet to go through with it. It is unclear if the company has decided not to push ahead with it or if they’re still working on it, so it’s something that we’ll just have to wait and see.

That being said, Apple isn’t necessarily a company known for gaming. The ongoing joke is that Mac computers aren’t meant for gaming, so we’re not sure how seriously gamers would take the company should they ever launch such a service.
