As physical constraints and cost are capping the amount of “camera hardware” that can be crammed into the rear camera system, some OEMs are moving the photography battleground to the Selfie camera.

The new Huawei Nova 10 Pro comes with a 60 Megapixel selfie camera supported by a secondary 8MP 2X optical zoom camera – a first for a selfie combo. Typically, the secondary camera is a just a Bokeh sensor, but this 8MP one should snap very interesting details at close range.

Huawei might also try to enhance the photo details by using sensor fusion (blending data from both cameras) – we’re speculating here, but the possibility is real.

The cameras are housed on the upper-left area of the display which reminded us of previous high-end phones like the P40 Pro.

On paper, it seems like a vlogger’s dream selfie camera, but we’ll have to see how it behaves, and performs, in the real world. This phone arrives right on time because we’re working on a new SELFIE HW score which will complement our CAMERA HW (rear-camera) score.

The rear camera system has a strong 50MP sensor with RYYB sensor, like previous high-end Huawei phones. It is supported by a 8MP Bokeh sensor and a 8MP Ultrawide/Macro camera. It’s a good foundation, and you can see how some resources have been shifted to the selfie apparatus.

Camera aside, the rest of the phone brings good value for a mid-range phone (think of this as a Pixel 6a competitor). For example, the 2652×1200 6.78-inch display supports a 120Hz refresh rate.

Also, the computing platform is the proven Qualcomm Snapdragon 778 4G and the name indicates a glaring fact: it’s not a 5G phone. Modem and speed aside, it is similar in features to the Snapdragon 778G 5G, which is the most powerful of the series.

Will that prevent the phone’s commercialization? We’re not sure, as many buyers may be willing to trade off some networking capabilities for one of the best selfie camera specs we’ve seen.

Another thing that caught our attention is the 100W fast-charging which is very rare at this price range. It surely makes up for the fact that battery capacity is below 5000 mAh (4500 mAh).

The formidable charging speed can easily substitute a measly 500 mAh of capacity, especially if you have access to an electric outlet. 100W fast-charge can probably give you 500mAh worth of charge in less than 3mn.
