Apple has officially announced its next-generation silicon processors: the base M6 and the high-performance M5 Ultra. Designed to power updated versions of the Mac Mini and Mac Studio (that, unfortunately, have no notable design changes at all) before expanding to future MacBook Pro and iMac models, both chips introduce significant leaps in transistor density, energy efficiency, and on-device artificial intelligence capabilities.

The M6: 2 nm Efficiency and Mainstream Performance

Targeted at everyday users, creators, and developers, the Apple M6 is among the first commercial PC processors built on a cutting-edge 2nm manufacturing process (likely TSMC’s N2 node).

  • CPU Architecture: Features a 12-core layout with 2 “Super Cores,” 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores. Apple reports it delivers the world’s fastest single-thread performance alongside a 20% gain in multi-core speed over the M5.
  • Graphics & Memory: Includes a 12-core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Dynamic Caching, and 30% faster rendering. It supports up to 32 GB of unified memory with a memory bandwidth of 170 GB/s.
  • AI Processing: Integrates a dual 16-core Neural Engine, effectively doubling the peak AI computing capacity compared to its direct predecessor.

The M5 Ultra: Raw Power for Heavy Workloads

Engineered for intense computing demands—such as 3D rendering, scientific computing, and hosting large language models (LLMs) locally—the M5 Ultra utilizes a quad-die configuration via Apple’s UltraFusion technology, delivering inter-die bandwidth exceeding 4.4 TB/s.

  • Scalable Compute: Configurable with up to a 36-core CPU (12 Super Cores and 24 performance cores) and up to an 80-core GPU, providing a 40% jump in graphics throughput and up to 4.5x faster AI acceleration.
  • Massive Memory Footprint: Supports up to 512 GB of unified memory with 1.2 TB/s of bandwidth, capable of running models with hundreds of billions of parameters.
  • Multimedia Engine: Features a 32-core Neural Engine, hardware-accelerated AV1 decoding, and dedicated ProRes accelerators optimized for multi-stream high-resolution video editing.

Updated Mac Mini and Mac Studio Pricing and Availability

The new processors debut immediately in refreshed desktop lineups, with pre-orders open now and official retail shipping beginning September 22. The Mac Mini powered by the M6 starts at $899 with 16 GB of unified memory and 256 GB of storage, while the higher-end M5 Pro configuration begins at $1,699.

For pro-tier creative and scientific studios, the refreshed Mac Studio starts at $2,499 for the M5 Max variant and $5,499 for the flagship M5 Ultra model, scaling up to $18,299 for fully maxed hardware configurations. Both desktop lines also introduce updated connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thunderbolt 5 support.
