DIY custom cellphone induction charger

Induction charging could very well be the way of the future for juicing up your cellphones, but it seems with the demise of Palm in the smartphone arena, their TouchStone is as far as it got – most of the other phones released after that came with a regular wired charger (even the magical iPhone 4). Derek Hughes decided to literally take things into his own hands, conjuring a custom back plate with induction charging circuitry for his HTC HD2. The final result works just fine, but it fails aesthetically since the stock back plate blocked the inductive field and couldn’t be used. This solution you see here relies on a couple of aftermarket cases, where one will fit onto the handset while the other, meant for a BlackBerry, will house a credit card. Cutting a hole in the back of the cellphone case, the credit card holder was epoxied in place and repainted. This allows the charger to fit in the credit card case, while leaving some room for a credit card as well. The magnetic fields around the circuitry have been measured and found to be insufficient to damage the magnetic strip on any credit card that you slip in. Check out the video in the extended post to get a better idea on what this project is all about.
