South Korea is a country where robots are much more commonplace compared to other countries (save for Japan), so it is no surprise see the Robot Institute, a new South Korean robotics venture, design what is touted to be the first “volunteerbot” in the world. Known as KIRO, it has so far made cameos at different international robot-related events and tournaments, greeting participants in their native language while offering information including game rules, competition schedules, and results. Apart from that, when it appears in kindergarten and primary school classrooms, it will be aptly known as KIRO Reader, relying on its integrated touchscreen display and multimedia edutainment software suite to impart knowledge on English, storytelling, and mathematics. Other practical applications of KIRO involve helping around the home as well as in the medical sector.
