Nokia Maps now available on new S40 phones

There is a slew of new S40-powered handsets from Nokia released today, and Nokia Maps will be available on that platform for free – this will enable a larger number of people who will make use of the service without having to go through the wallet pains of paying for heavy data charges. This new service will be an extremely large boost to S40-powered handsets, as it will blur the lines further (or at least in terms of navigation purposes) between smartphones as well as feature phones.

Nokia Maps will be preinstalled on the Nokia C2-03 alongside its range of variants, and it is ready to work righ out-of-the-box – where among them include maps data for the user’s region. You will have no need to download further data to get going, that’s a definite plus point in our books. Maps for Series 40 will not require the handset to feature GPS support either, as it will triangulate your position from cell tower locations, while working in tandem with smart routing software to deliver turn-by-turn directions for drivers.

How effective will that be remains to be seen, but if it is ready for prime time, then we are quite sure Nokia isn’t going to bungle up this job considering their precarious position in the smartphone/featurephone hierarchy at the moment.
