Remember all the attention paid to Megaupload when the site was shut down? Well, Hollywood intends to continue on that “success”, and are requesting a US District Court for a summary judgment against Hotfile. Film studios claim that Hotfile is a file sharing site whose business model is similar to Megaupload, citing repeated copyright infringement as the main concern. Plaintiffs Disney, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia, and Warner Bros. argued that “Hotfile’s business model is indistinguishable from that of the website Megaupload, which recently was indicted criminally for engaging in the very same conduct as Hotfile. Defendants even admit they formed Hotfile ‘to compete with’ Megaupload.” Well, it would be interesting to see what would happen to Hotfile, and whether the Megaupload shutdown would prove to be a precedent for future cases.
