This is according to Timoth Arcuri, an analyst with Cowen & Co. who has recently speculated that there is a chance that Apple could figure out a deal with health insurance companies to help subsidized the cost of the iWatch. In Arcuri’s research note, “We continue to believe it is possible the product (iWatch) is backstopped by some sort of insurance subsidization model similar to the carrier subsidization model for iPhone.”
His speculation is based on how he believes that with the iWatch reportedly being health-focusd, that consumers wearing the device might be more conscious of their activities and calorie intakes, which could make them healthier and less prone to sickness, thus leading to a decrease in insurance claims, which might motivate insurance companies to offer a subsidy as long as it leads to healthier clients.
While Arcuri seems to be generally positive about the iWatch and how it will be different from the bevy of smartatches available in the market today, he does express a touch of skepticism, stating that the wearables market is “nascent and fraught with uncertainty”. What do you guys think?
