When it comes to watching TV shows or movies, lighting plays an important role. No, not lighting in the show itself, but in the place you are watching it in as it helps to enhance the experience. For example watching a horror movie in the dark might be more scary than if you were to watch it in the middle of the afternoon with the shades all open, right?

Well thanks to home automation and smart devices, Syfy is going to take advantage of that with the upcoming 12 Monkeys science fiction thriller which will sync with the Philips Hue system. Basically users who have the Philips Hue smart lightbulb installed in their home can sync it with Syfy’s app, which in turn will put on a light show designed to work in conjunction with the actual show.

This works through audio cues which in turn will command the lights to perform certain actions at certain periods of time, effectively enhancing the viewing experience for the viewer and making it a more immersive experience. This isn’t the first time Syfy has worked with Philips on this as they have done something similar with Sharknado 2.

It’s a clever idea and it could possibly hint at the future of home entertainment.  Syfy will be providing this dynamic lighting experience in all 13 episodes of 12 Monkeys which is expected to air its first episode on the 16th of January, so if you have the Philips Hue system at home, perhaps this could be worth checking out.
