samsung logo 4Second place is the first loser – that is what I saw on a “No Fear” tee many years ago, and while it drips with some bit of sarcasm, there is also truth in that. However, context is always important, so it is no mean feat for Samsung to be the company with the second most patents awarded to them by the USPTO in 2014. We are talking about a total of 4,952 patents, which translates to an average of 13.5 patents in a single day, now how about that?

In fact, it is a personal best for the South Korean conglomerate, especially when you take into consideration how this marks an increase of 5.9% over the number of patents they racked up in 2013. Samsung’s main rival, Apple, was awarded 2,003 patents in 2014, which would place them 11th on the list, behind Panasonic, although Apple is still ahead of General Electric that finished at 12th. As for Apple’s patent awards in 2014, it points to a gain of 13% compared to its 2013 “achievement”.

Google themselves settled for 8th place, where they experienced a 38.6% increase year-over-year, allowing it to make its way to the top 10 for the very first time. Top position belonged to IBM, and this is a record not to be trifled with as they have maintained that spot for the 22nd year running.
