facebook-lite

Earlier this month Facebook announced a new version of its Facebook for Android application that’s aimed at emerging markets since the app itself is quite small and it uses less data while being able to function across all network conditions. It’s called Facebook Lite and the roll out has begun in parts of Asia, today Facebook Lite has gone live for users in India and the Philippines.

When Facebook Lite was announced the company said that it had built this application to ensure that users could get a reliable Facebook experience even if they had the minimum amount of bandwidth available.

In many emerging markets networks can be slow, or high speed internet can cost out of the reach of most people, which is why users might find it hard to access all of the features that the official Facebook for Android app has.

Facebook Lite will help users in those markets as it weighs less than 1MB so its easy to download and run even on a low-end Android device, it provides core Facebook features such as News Feed, notifications, status updates, photos and more.

Any Android device running firmware version 2.2 or higher is compatible with Facebook Lite, the app itself is available as a free download from the Google Play Store.
